“Play builds the kind of free-and-easy, try-it-out, do-it-yourself character that our future needs.” - James L. Hymes Jr.

Historically, sport and fashion have been intertwined since ancient civilizations. The Greeks celebrated athletics and the human form through events like the Olympics, influencing the creation of functional sportswear. The practicality of the attire worn during these events later filtered into daily use. This historical resonance underlines how sport not only inspires clothing but also reshapes its narrative.

And, curiously, editing an issue of Vogue dedicated to sport was something I would never have imagined in my teenage days, when I used doctor notes to escape physical education classes, or, even later, with the real "allergy" that I've always had towards gyms. In fact, my connection with the sport, as a practitioner, is practically null. But I realized that all my life I have been doing some kind of exercise, even if it is not conventionally recognized as a sport, and I go back to my childhood and a time when there weren't gyms on every corner, like today... every neighborhood or every school had groups of children who played in the street. There was as much space for imagination as for physical exercise... it was a time when the word gaming had not yet become popular, and spontaneous teams came together, made up of friends, neighbors or schoolmates, and there was laughter, competition, newly established complicities, but above all a lot of physical exercise: jumping rope, playing the rubber band game, the scarf game or the famous monkey game… skills and physical dexterity were worked on, which today is practically reduced to exercising the thumbs, isolated in one's bedroom, and interaction is limited to chat conversations and playing online with friends. Street games, increasingly rare these days, were my, and of thousands of children, first gymnasium. The street was a real Olympic arena.

As the years progressed, I continued to steer away from gyms, but I continued to practice an exercise that works several muscles: I walk a lot, especially on the Portuguese sidewalk, in Lisbon. And with one more detail, which works even more muscles: I walk in high heels.
