In this 1835 tale by the Danish Hans Christian Andersen, our protagonist has to prove her nobility and value before the prince by being subjected to sleep with a pea under various mattresses and covers, waking up with a bruise to prove that her skin and posture are delicate and worthy of a princess. Nothing could be further from the contours it would take in the 21st century.

Nothing could be further from the contours it would take in the 21st century: in 2022, the princess would be an influencer who would automatically make an Instagram story demeaning the establishment, a reel denouncing the Prince Regent's unsolicited and unrequited flirtation, and add a discount code for the nearest palace that offered her lodging. For the sake of sustainability, I would also take the opportunity to make an instagrammable delicacy with the said vegetable, because everyone knows that peas are a great source of vegan protein.
